Watching the sunrise over the mountain range with Gohan had been one of the best mornings that Videl could remember in a long time. Being away from the city had been wonderful for her; the lack of loud sounds or the absence of urgency in the area had brought her peace. The serenity nature of the countryside was alluring to her. The bonus was that there was no reminder of her life in the city, from the crime to the loud noises or her father, the liar everywhere, only the tranquility of the rural district. She loved watching all the animals around his house since she usually only saw animals if they were someone’s pets. The birds chirped, sounding like a beautiful melody as she watched a few frogs hop about.

While Erasa’s was great, and there was never a moment that she didn’t love her best friend, this was just what she needed when she was forced to say goodbye to her friend’s home and her own because of her father. Her estrangement from him was never meant to be permanent. Still, Videl was starting to see that having him in her life was worst than not, especially with all the gymnastics he had been doing to damage her since she left home. At least without the proximity to all of that, she could let some of it go and stop stressing about it so much. Despite all that, she missed her dad, or at least the person she previously thought he was, but even if she could, she wouldn’t return. While ignorance is bliss, knowledge is power.

The Son family home was much warmer than anything she had ever experienced in the city. Part of it was how Chi-Chi held her family together; the other part was how much light and sunshine they all cast over anyone around them. Even with Goku training the way he did and bringing Goten with him, which Videl could tell bothered Gohan, the light was still there. He would never talk about how it fazed him, but then again, she rarely mentioned anything about her father, either. It was a sore subject with both of them. The sun has risen even more, making it beam higher over the mountains, making Gohan look like he was glowing without his Saiyan powers. He was radiant, and she didn’t want to take her eyes off of him.

She didn’t think he noticed how he affected her, which was cute. That was one of the things that she liked about him, his innocence, it wasn’t something she saw much these days, and it intrigued her. Gohan was like an enigma, and Videl liked a good mystery.

“Breakfast should be finished soon,” Gohan said in a whisper. “We don’t want Goten and my father to eat it all before we get there.”

“Right,” her smile matched his as she accepted his hand, as he helped her up.

The glow of the Son’s kitchen could be seen outside as she followed Gohan in and joined the family at the table. A family that she hoped one day to join.
